S & Y Motors was founded in 1964 by Dennis G. Storer and R. W. York on the
site previously held by A. E. Hopewell Haulage Contractors, in Station Road,
Earl Shilton. Messers Storer, a former director of the haulage business, and
York decided to set up their own business intending to provide a complete
service for the motorist, including dealing in new and used cars, fuel,
servicing and recovery in the event of breakdown or accident.
The forecourt was extensively re-designed to allow for the sale of Mobil
petrol, which was sold there for over 30 years and is now succeeded by Murco
brand fuels.
In 1965, Dennis’ eldest son Alan, left school and joined the family
business. He quickly developed his skills as a mechanic and specialised on
the tuning of engines using the most up to date equipment designed for the
purpose. Alan was joined later by his younger brother Phillip. The two
brothers are still with the business today together with an extended team of
other mechanics including Alan’s son Jonathon. Also Janet, Dennis's younger
daughter joined the company office whilst her husband, David, joined the
mechanics' team; making three generations of
the family now involved in its running.
As car sales became more and more competitive and profit margins shrank,
they decided to cease car sales and concentrate on repairs, servicing and
breakdown recovery. Accident recovery was a large part of the business and
included a contract for the local police to recover accident damaged
vehicles. This has now ended and the main thrust of the recoveries is for
national companies such as Green Flag, Britannia and other major
organisations.
Servicing still plays a major role and includes air conditioning systems in
modern cars, computerised engine management systems as well as routine items
such as brakes, oil changes etc. All enquiries are dealt with in a friendly
and helpful manner by fully trained staff under the leadership of the family
members themselves. |
